Protein filled foods cause you to feel fuller for a longer period of time, do not spike blood glucose levels, and will help people that want to lose weight do so faster. Protein fuels muscles and will cause you to build stronger, leaner muscle if combined with a healthy, low carbohydrate diet. You'll also avoid those early afternoon drops in energy. No more sugar highs and crashes!
Starchy foods, usually highly refined carbohydrates, are often considered the root of an obesity epidemic. Before World War II it was considered common knowledge that a diet high in protein was preferable over starchy, processed foods. After the war when people were more concerned with faster cooking times and had less time to sit down around the family dinner table, it became more popular to eat highly refined and pre-packaged meals. In the 1950's, T.V. Dinners were all the rage. The portions of proteins compared to carbohydrates began to shrink and waistbands grew.
It is important to note that when increasing protein you should choose more healthy lean proteins. Chicken breasts and fish are great sources of lean protein. You can also add protein through meal replacement or supplemental shakes and protein bars. Protein powder can be mixed into smoothies or 'power-shakes' – try one of our shake recipes for a ProEnergy Whey Protein Shake.
You can also find protein in plant-based sources. Almond butter is well known for the protein content, but you can also enjoy a wide number of other high protein plant based foods. Almost all nuts can provide a great dose of protein. Beans can be used to fill in for meat in a meal whenever cholesterol is a concern or for people that choose not to eat meat at all. Ovo-Lacto vegetarians can find plenty of protein in eggs, cheese, and other dairy products. Fish is another excellent source of high quality protein, this meat will also supply plenty of omega 3 fatty acids which will help you feel even better.
