Omega-3 fatty acids are an important supplement in heart health. These healthy polyunsaturated fats help build up your cells and provide essential parts of many biological functions in the body. These fatty acids are the staple of many parts of the body's physiology. Depletion of these fatty acids can cause a myriad of problems.
Types of Omega-3 Fatty Acids
There are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids that we'll explain in more detail. These are EPA (or eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (or docosahexanoic acid), and ALA (or alpha-linolenic acid).
- Eicosapentaenoic Acid - EPA is easily used in the body and is found in cold-water fish.
- Docosahexanoic Acid - DHA is also easily used in the body and found in cold-water fish.
- Alpha-Linolenic Acid - ALA is found in plant-derived foods like walnuts, canola oil, and flaxseed. ALA is easily converted in the liver to EPA and DHA to benefit the body.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Your Heart
Omega-3 fatty acids help cut high triglyceride levels (the blood fat of the cholesterol number). The EPA and DHA in omega-3 has been show to lower this number, which is a heart disease risk factor. Lowering the bad cholesterol in the body has a great effect on keeping the body healthier. Omega-3 fatty acids are also able to lower the body's overall risk of heart disease related deaths. Those that take fish oil supplements (and our Omega Mix/Oil) lower the risk of a heart attack and reduce the heart's arrhythmia risk.
Omega-3 as a Supplement
Taking supplements of Omega-3 is a great way to get the necessary amount of nutrients needed in the body, especially if you aren't a cold-water fish eater. The consensus among many nutritionists is 1,000 milligrams, or one gram, of Omega-3 per serving with DHA and EPA combined. Any Fish Oil Supplement that you take should have no less than 60% EPA and DHA per capsule. You can also use a tablespoon of our Omega Oil or a quarter cup of our Omega Mix Blend multiple times per day. Taking supplements should only be done after discussing your needs with your physician.
