First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative has cast the light, once again, on fast food and the effect it has had on the increasing weight of America’s children. But it’s not just about the kids!
Research suggests that every day, about one-quarter of American adults eat at fast-food restaurants! This, too, is a national disaster.
Fast food is convenient, for sure, but it is also loaded with saturated fat, sodium, and calories and very low in nutritional value. Plus...
- The fat contained in fast foods increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.
- Many fast foods have a high amount of artificial flavors, colors and preservatives. None of these are very good for your health, and they’re worse for our children and grandchildren because their bodies cannot handle all the chemicals.
- Fast food has very, very little nutritional value.
Do you remember the "Super Size Me" experiment?
"Supersize Me" was an unscientific study conducted by of one man, Morgan Spurlock. In his attempt to test the effects of fast food, he ate three meals each day from McDonalds. His experiment lasted for one month and, during that time, he ate every food offered on the on the McDonalds’ menu. When "supersizes" were available, he ordered them.
Not only did Spurlock gain 24 ½ pounds, but his cholesterol level rose, he experienced sexual dysfunction and mood swings, and fat accumulated in his liver.
In short, Spurlock’s study suggests that the effects of fast food on your overall health and well-being can be horrific.
Yes, this was just one man’s story but The Lancet, one of the world’s oldest and most respect medical journals, later published the results of a longterm study involving more than 3,000 participants that came to the same general conclusion!
And, in his book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, author Eric Schlosser concurs. In addition, his book reveals how fast food restaurants market to our society’s most vulnerable, our children, and how their food and drinks are compromising their ability to reach adulthood with their health intact.
Tell your children this.
The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study reported that fast food increases the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. In addition, participants who consumed fast food two or more times a week gained approximately 10 more pounds and had twice as great increase in insulin resistance in the 15-year period than participants who consumed fast food less than once per week.
It’s been said that today’s youth may be the first generation of children who will not live as long as their parent will live. Fast food, and the busy lifestyles that make it so popular, are largely to blame.
