Better brain function through Omega 3 supplementation

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids might just have a major influence on your mood, personality and behavior, according to a study presented by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine researchers at the 64th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Psychosomatic Society in Denver.

In a study of 106 healthy volunteers, researchers found that participants who had lower blood levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were more likely to report mild or moderate symptoms of depression.

These same people also reported a more negative outlook and were more impulsive generally. Conversely, people in the study who had higher blood levels of omega-3s were found to be more agreeable.

There’s an old wives tale that fish is brain food, but only in the past 30 years has the connection between high concentrations of the long chain omega-3’s (found in fish) and brain function been studied scientifically.

It began in 1976 when Lamptey & Walker raised rats on diets that were low in omega-3.  These omega-3 deficient rats performed significantly more poorly on learning tasks than control rats.

In humans, there is an IQ difference of approximately 3 points, when measured in childhood years, between children who were breast-fed as infants with those fed bottled feeds which at the time were devoid of long chain polyunsaturates which are similar to omega-3’s.

A University in Scotland study recently found that having long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates in infant formulae enables the recipients to solve problems more rapidly than comparable infants raised on standard formula.

So what’s the problem with the typical American diet? It’s that we eat too much omega-6, and not enough omega-3…and the ratio of the two is important.  Our modern diet emphasizes omega-6-rich foods much more than omega-3-rich foods, yet the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should be 2:1.

Our modern American fast-food “eat it on the run” diet is out of whack. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is more like 20:1, 30:1…even as high as 50:1. 

Most Americans probably don’t need omega-6’s, since you already get plenty of them.  What you need are more omega-3s.  You can increase your omega-3’s by eating two or three servings a week of cold-water oily fish such as:

  • Atlantic salmon
  • Lake trout, tuna
  • Atlantic mackerel
  • Ground flax seeds
