How do whey and soy compare as protein sources?
Soy protein is made from soybeans, whey protein is derived from milk. While soy-based
foods have many benefits, in terms of high-quality protein, whey is arguably the superior
choice. For starters, whey protein isolate contains optimal levels of all 9 essential amino
acids, while soy protein has an incomplete amino acid profile, as it is limiting in the essential
amino acid methionine, which has many important functions in your body.
Also, soy has a biological value (BV) score of only 74, while whey protein comes in at an
impressive 104.3 Whey protein also has significantly higher net protein utilization (NPU) at
92 than soy at 61. NPU is the ratio of amino acids converted to protein─which is profoundly
affected by the level of limiting amino acids within a food. Additionally, soy is among the nine
most common food allergens afflicting Americans,4 and as such, is not an ideal choice for
daily protein needs.
Are there any side effects associated with Whey Protein Isolate?
Whey Protein Isolate is extremely well tolerated by people of all ages. However there are a few considerations. Whey increases glutathione levels in the blood and liver. Glutathione is the body's most powerful antioxidant and plays a key role in immune function. When liver glutathione levels rise, the liver can more effectively detoxify the body. Some people – especially those who have consumed a very poor diet or who have been exposed to high levels of environmental toxins–may have a mild temporary reaction to the mobilized toxins as the liver removes them from fat storage. Also, because whey protein isolate is composed of the same basic proteins found in human breast milk, those with milk allergies may experience minor gastric distress from Whey Protein Isolate. This usually disappears if you reduce the amount of Whey Protein Isolate you consume. If you have a serious milk protein allergy, which is very rare, you should not use whey isolate. Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy.
Can Whey Protein Isolate cause constipation?
Low-quality Whey Protein Isolate can cause digestive upsets, including constipation. If this occurs using a high-quality whey protein isolate, it may due to consuming too little water and/or insufficient levels of essential fatty acids (EFAs). It's important to drink at least ten glasses of pure water per day and incorporate at least three servings of raw seeds or raw seed oils, such as ENERGYFIRST® OmegaEnergy® Oil and OmegaEnergy® Mix. The seeds and oils contain soluble fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs that are essential to proper digestion and elimination. Exercise and vitamin C can both be helpful as well.
Can I use Whey Protein Isolate if I have kidney disease?
100% whey protein isolate is one of the most easily digested and best absorbed forms of protein available. It has an extremely high Protein Efficiency Ratio – a measure of protein quality. This is especially important in conditions like renal failure where protein intake must be limited and it is most prudent to consume the highest quality options, like whey protein isolate and egg white protein, rather than proteins like red meat and dairy that produce problematic metabolic waste by-products and residues.
Can I use ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder if I have celiac disease?
Yes. While those with celiac disease are instructed to avoid wheat and gluten, ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder is totally free of both.
Can I mix ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder with fruit juice?
While you could certainly do so, this would defeat the purpose of the ENERGYFIRST Program. Fruit juice – even freshly squeezed – is very high in sugar. It takes many pieces of whole fruit to make one glass of juice. Fruit juice is quickly broken down into glucose in your bloodstream causing an instant blood sugar rush and subsequent insulin spike – a vicious cycle. You can use whole fruit in your shake, but avoid fruit juice. Fiber-dense whole fruit is far less concentrated than fruit juice. The best plan is to blend whole fruit with raw seed oil and Whey Protein Isolate, which slows gastric emptying and the conversion of carbohydrates to glucose.
