What’s the best exercise for you?

When asked what’s the best exercise to do, I once heard a physician respond that the right exercise for you is the one that you’ll do. I chuckled, but I couldn’t agree more!

For some, that means running a marathon, while for others it means a friendly game of golf or a walk around the neighborhood park. For some, that means running a marathon, while for others it means a friendly game of golf or a walk around the neighborhood park.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you determine the best exercise program for you:

  • Do you appreciate the solitude of exercising alone or do you enjoy the company and camaraderie that often comes from exercising with others?

  • Would you prefer an indoor or outdoor activity?

  • Do you have the discipline to exercise at home or should you go to a gym where you might be motivated by others?

  • What time of day works best for you? How does that affect your exercise?

  • Do want to take a class to learn a new activity or get started quickly with something that you already know?

I sometimes hear people say that they don’t have the right clothes or the right equipment to exercise properly. While this may be the case for some activities, there are many things you can do with just a decent pair of tennis shoes. Examples include a light jog around your neighborhood or a brisk walk through your local shopping mall.

The key to any exercise program is consistency.

When you exercise on a regular basis, your body burns fat more efficiently and you have an easier time reaching your weight loss goals and maintaining a healthy weight. In addition, consistent exercise leads to better circulation and more vibrant energy.

For the sake of consistency, it helps to schedule exercise time, just as you schedule time for your other daily activities. And, if necessary, feel free to split up your workouts throughout day. You may find it easier to find two separate 30-minute time slots to exercise, as opposed to one solid hour. The benefits you’ll realize are the same.

Lastly, make exercise a priority. If you don’t, you’ll find something else “more important” to handle and you simply won’t do it.
