Why fiber, and why psyllium
Fiber is the part of plant food your body does not digest, and it is the nutrient most Western diets are shortest on. The recommended intake is roughly 25 to 38 grams a day depending on age and sex; average intake in the United States is closer to 15.
Soluble and gel-formingPsyllium absorbs water and forms a gel, which is why it behaves differently from bran and why it is the fiber most often used in research and in clinical settings.
One ingredientNo added sugar, no artificial sweetener, no orange flavoring, no colors. It is a plain powder, which makes it easy to add to something you already drink.
Food first, thoughBeans, oats, vegetables and fruit are better sources because they bring everything else with them. Use this to close a gap, not to replace the food.
How to use it
Start small and build up. Begin with about a teaspoon in a full glass of water once a day, and increase gradually over a week or two. Adding a lot of fiber at once, especially without extra water, causes exactly the discomfort you were trying to avoid.
Always take it with plenty of liquid, at least a full glass, and drink more water through the day. Psyllium works by absorbing water; taken dry or with too little liquid it can swell and cause choking or blockage.
Take it at least an hour apart from medications, since fiber can slow their absorption. If you have a bowel condition, difficulty swallowing, or take prescription medication, talk to your physician first.
Where it fits
Fiber and protein are the two things most people are genuinely short of, and both are easy to fix at breakfast. A scoop of ProEnergy and a spoon of this in the same shake covers a good part of both before the day starts. The recipes show how people actually put it together.
