Step 4 of 7
Greens and whole foods: eat like your grandmother said.
No calorie counting, no points, no apps. Build every meal the same way: a palm of protein, a fist of vegetables, a thumb of good fat, and make the vegetables green more often than not.
The plate
- Protein, a palm-sized portion: fish, chicken, eggs, lean beef, or a ProEnergy shake.
- Vegetables, a fist or two: spinach, kale, broccoli, green beans, salad greens, peppers, anything that grew in the ground and is still recognizable.
- Good fat, a thumb: olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds.
- Slow carbohydrates in moderation: fruit, sweet potato, oats, beans. Less of the white stuff, bread, pasta, rice, sugar, and none of it first thing in the morning.
Why greens
Dark green vegetables carry the widest spread of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants per calorie of anything you can eat, plus fiber that keeps digestion regular and appetite calm. Most Americans eat less than half the vegetables they should, and greens are the first thing to go when life gets busy.
The shortcut on busy days
Greenergy is twelve organic greens, six probiotic strains, two digestive enzymes and five adaptogens in one 9-gram scoop. It is not a substitute for a salad, but on the days a salad is not going to happen it is a very good stand-in. Mix a scoop in cold water in the morning, or drop it into the shake from Step 3. It is USDA Organic, vegan, and tastes clean rather than grassy.
Three easy wins
- A big salad with every dinner. Pre-washed greens in a bag remove the excuse.
- Raw vegetables as the default snack: snap peas, celery with almond butter, cucumber.
- A fresh green juice (celery, cucumber, spinach, lemon, ginger) if you have a juice bar near work. It is the best mid-afternoon pick-me-up there is.
