There is no shortage of detox diets and cleansing plans on the internet, in books, and even from noncredentialed, self-proclaimed experts. These numerous detox programs vary widely.
Most of them advise against processed foods and foods associated with sensitivities, such as gluten, red meat, eggs, or dairy.
Other programs, however, recommend fasting. This practice can be risky for some and may actually slow down the body's natural detoxification processes.
There are safe things you can do, however, to enhance or support your body's natural detoxification pathways.
1. Consume adequate protein. Protein is vital to replenish levels of glutathione, the body's master detoxification enzyme.
2. Eat 5-9 servings of fruit and vegetables per day. (One scoop of Greenergy provides the equivalent of 5 full veggie servings!)
3. Stay well hydrated with clean water. Also, drink green tea.
4. Consume adequate fiber each and every day from vegetables, nuts, seeds, and unprocessed whole grains.
5. Include cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli, red cabbage, kale, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage, white cabbage, mustard greens, an turnip greens. Isothiocyanates (ITCs) from cruciferous vegetables activate a wide variety of enzymes involved in the body's natural detox systems.
5. Use garlic, onions, and leeks regularly.
6. Eat naturally fermented foods - yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi. If needed, take a quality probiotic. This helps your body control toxins from gut microbes.
7. Maintain digestive regularity.
8. Fill any nutrient gaps with a high-quality multivitamin/multimineral supplement. Many vitamins and minerals are involved in the body's natural detoxification processes.
