FAQ's About Whey Protein Isolate
Whey Protein Isolate
Why Do EnergyFirst Products Work Better Together?

When you combine EnergyFirst Whey Protein Isolate Powder with Greenergy and EnergyFirst OmegaEnergy Oil or Mix Blend, you harness a powerful array of benefits beyond what each alone provides. These three highly effective tools operate synergistically to promote stable blood sugar levels, minimize hunger and cravings, heighten mental acuity, and elevate your mood. One of their most important roles is to stimulate your metabolism, which accelerates fat burning and boosts your energy naturally for greater overall performance.

What exactly is Whey Protein Isolate?

Whey is a substance derived from cow’s milk consisting primarily of protein, lactose, minerals, and trace amounts of fat. Whey is a 100% complete protein, meaning that it contains all 9 essential amino acids required for human health. While whey was long considered a mere by-product of cheese manufacturing, by 1975, it was being processed as a supplemental protein powder. In the 1990s, advanced micro-filtration and ion exchange technology enabled scientists to “isolate” whey in its purest form. Whey protein isolate─which retains the full amino acid profile while removing the fat and lactose─is the most biologically available form of protein: at least 90% by weight.

What's the best form of Whey Protein Isolate and why?

Whey Protein Isolate comes in several forms, including Whey Protein Isolate concentrate and whey protein isolate. Both are fast acting, long burning proteins. They differ significantly, however, in that Whey Protein Isolate concentrate typically has between 29% and 80% protein with the remainder consisting of sugar (lactose) fat, and residual ash. Whey protein isolate, on the other hand, "isolates" the whey, delivering Whey Protein Isolate in its most pristine form – at least 90% protein by weight – and is virtually free of fat and lactose. Whey protein isolate is the richest source of the eight essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids that your body requires for growth, energy production, and vibrant health.

What are the benefits of Whey Protein Isolate?

A large body of research indicates that Whey Protein Isolate:

  • Offers approximately 99% pure, undenatured protein with a biological value (BV) of 104, compared with 74 for soy.1
  • Helps to reduce the effects of stress and improve coping ability by altering serotonin levels in the brain.2
  • Minimizes diabetes risk by safely anchoring blood sugar levels with low-glycemic protein.
  • Curbs the appetite by increasing satiety─the feeling of being comfortably full and content─due to the combined action of whey protein fractions and short chains of amino-acids released after digestion.3
  • Enhances the immune system by raising glutathione levels – a powerful antioxidant produced by the body to protect cells and neutralize toxins.
  • Increases your ability to exercise and experience faster recovery time.
  • Encourages bone growth and helps to prevent osteoporosis.
  • Has the highest biological value (BV) of any protein because it is absorbed, utilized, and retained by the body more effectively than other proteins.
  • May help lower triglycerides and cholesterol.
  • May help prevent chronic periodontal disease.
  • May help prevent prostate cancer.
  • Fights infections.

Who should consume Whey Protein Isolate?

Whey protein is ideal for people of all ages, including:

  • Children: Growing bodies need high-quality protein every day─without added fat, cholesterol, sugar, or refined carbs. In fact, research suggests that processed carbs and sugar in both foods and beverages play a large role in America’s childhood obesity epidemic, and may contribute to other health and learning problems.
  • Teenagers: Many adolescents over consume sugar and junk/processed/fast food, which factors in to problems like mood swings, acne, low energy, extra pounds, and often, as a result, diminished self esteem during these important, formative years. Upgrading a poor diet with healthy, blood sugar-stabilizing whey protein can help alleviate these issues.
  • Adults of all ages: Over time, our ability to assimilate protein decreases, which can impair daily wellness since protein is such a vital dietary component. Easy digesting, well-absorbed whey protein offers valuable daily nutrition, while also helping to preserve lean muscle mass, promote strong bones, and protect immune health throughout our lifespan.
  • Fitness Seekers, Athletes and Body Builders: Naturally energizing whey protein is extremely valuable for men, women and children who exercise regularly because it facilitates a highly efficient anabolic response─your body’s ability to build and repair muscle. It also helps to promote fat loss while preserving precious, metabolism- boosting lean muscle mass.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers: Due to its quick assimilation and extraordinarily high bioavailability, easy-digesting whey protein is the gold standard, especially when a woman’s protein requirements are highest. Along with nourishing expectant and lactating mothers, healthy fetal and infant development depends on sufficient levels of high-quality, complete protein.
  • Waist-trimmers: people of all ages seeking healthy, permanent weight loss can benefit greatly from at least one daily meal featuring whey protein, ideally breakfast. Studies comparing whey and casein on appetite and satiety-related hormones found whey protein powder to be most effective in promoting satisfaction and fullness, resulting in a naturally reduced appetite and decreased food intake.1,2

How much protein does my body need for optimal health and energy?

Protein is the raw material for the building and repair of body tissues. 60-70% of the body's protein is found in muscle tissue. In order for muscle growth to occur – which is essential for getting lean – you must consume more protein than you utilize. Your protein needs range from .8 grams to 1.5 grams or more per pound of body weight, depending on your activity level and training goals. Larger physical size, greater activity level, and higher stress all increase your protein needs. Pregnant and lactating women, children, and carbohydrate-sensitive people need 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

What should I look for in a high-quality protein powder?

How can you determine if a protein supplement is high-quality? It should:

  • Provide the best available form of protein. For example, while whey protein isolate contains optimal levels of all 9 essential amino acids, soy protein is limiting in the essential amino acid methionine, which has many important functions in your body.
  • Have the highest possible biological value (BV)─a measure of how much protein is actually absorbed into your body’s tissues.12 While soy has a BV score of only 74, whey protein comes in at 104.13 Soy is also among the nine most common food allergens afflicting Americans, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.14
  • Deliver optimal levels of the 9 essential amino acids─histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine─that must be supplied by your daily menu as your body can’t produce them.
  • Consist of pure, undenatured whey protein. Due to the advanced method of cross-flow microfiltration, whey protein isolate retains approximately 99% of the protein in its natural form for maximum bioavailability.
  • Be rich in the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs)─isoleucine, leucine, and valine─which work in concert to stabilize/regulate blood sugar and energy levels, promote muscle growth and repair, and encourage the production of growth hormones naturally. BCAAs also prevent oxidative damage, and enhance physical endurance.11
  • Contain minimal sugar. Read the nutritional facts label carefully. Sugar comes in many forms, such as sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, dextrose, glucose, and lactose─milk sugar. Note the number of sugar grams you get per serving. Aim for 1 gram or less, and be sure total carbohydrates are no more than 3-4 grams per serving.
  • Be naturally sweetened. Commonly used sugar alcohols─such as sorbitol, mannitol, malitol, and xylitol─can cause stomach upset for many people. Other sugar substitutes─like aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-K, and saccharin may pose serious health risks. All chemical sweeteners should be avoided, especially for daily consumption.
  • Not include fat and cholesterol. Whey protein isolate is virtually free of cholesterol, fat and lactose. If your protein powder does list fat as an ingredient, be sure it’s no more than 2 grams per serving.

What makes ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder different from others on the market?

ENERGYFIRST ProEnergy Protein Powder offers whey protein in its most pristine, bioavailable form─isolate. Whey protein isolate is developed using highly advanced, cross-flow micro-filtration, which “isolates” the pure amino acids, leaving the fat and lactose behind. ENERGYFIRST ProEnergy Protein Powder is comprised of only 100% pure whey protein isolate and natural flavors, with stevia leaf extract for a touch of sweetness.

Pharmaceutical grade ENERGYFIRST ProEnergy Protein Powder has been used medically for both immune disorders and cancer. And with good reason, as a number of clinical trials have successfully been performed using whey protein in the treatment of cancer, HIV, hepatitis B, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and as an antimicrobial agent.1 Additionally, with only 2 to 4 carbs per serving, low-glycemic, naturally sugar-free ENERGYFIRST ProEnergy Protein Powder is ideal nourishment both to prevent and manage diabetes.2

By contrast, cheaply manufactured forms of whey protein lack many of the health benefits provided by pure whey protein isolate. This is because the protein sub-fractions they contain─including valuable, immune-boosting lactoferrin─are damaged by heat and chemicals, resulting in comparatively poor quality, denatured whey protein. To maximize the many wellness attributes whey protein offers, skip the lower-grade, “bargain” versions.

Manufactured using cheap production methods─including excessive heat and chemicals─that denature the whey, damaging valuable protein sub-fractions such as lactoferrin─which plays multiple roles in maintaining your immune health.

Include inexpensive, comparatively low-grade versions of whey protein, such as concentrate, rather than delivering 100% pharmaceutical grade whey protein isolate. With the cheaper forms comes the sugar, fat, cholesterol, and lactose (milk sugar). Not only do these components detract from the health benefits whey protein offers, but lactose is also linked to gastro-intestinal upset and allergic responses.

Contain artificial and/or chemical sweeteners including potentially dangerous, chlorine-based Sucralose,3,4 the proven-carcinogen aspartame,5 and combustible, flammable, ace-sulfame-K, which may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, cramps, loss of appetite, and cancer.6 Ace- sulfame K also contains the carcinogen methylene chloride, which is linked to headaches, depression, nausea, mental confusion, liver and kidney effects, visual disturbances, and cancer in humans.7

Include cheap fillers such as glycerin and sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol, mannitol, and xylitol, among others, which may cause stomach upset, gas and diarrea.8

Can I use ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder if I am lactose intolerant?

Yes. ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder is made from 100% whey protein isolate which is lactose-free and hypo-allergenic, meaning it rarely causes allergic reactions. Please note that lower quality Whey Protein Isolate products do contain lactose and may cause allergic reactions including stomach upsets and other digestive problems.

How do whey and soy compare as protein sources?

Soy protein is made from soybeans, whey protein is derived from milk. While soy-based foods have many benefits, in terms of high-quality protein, whey is arguably the superior choice. For starters, whey protein isolate contains optimal levels of all 9 essential amino acids, while soy protein has an incomplete amino acid profile, as it is limiting in the essential amino acid methionine, which has many important functions in your body.

Also, soy has a biological value (BV) score of only 74, while whey protein comes in at an impressive 104.3 Whey protein also has significantly higher net protein utilization (NPU) at 92 than soy at 61. NPU is the ratio of amino acids converted to protein─which is profoundly affected by the level of limiting amino acids within a food. Additionally, soy is among the nine most common food allergens afflicting Americans,4 and as such, is not an ideal choice for daily protein needs.

Are there any side effects associated with Whey Protein Isolate?

Whey Protein Isolate is extremely well tolerated by people of all ages. However there are a few considerations. Whey increases glutathione levels in the blood and liver. Glutathione is the body's most powerful antioxidant and plays a key role in immune function. When liver glutathione levels rise, the liver can more effectively detoxify the body. Some people – especially those who have consumed a very poor diet or who have been exposed to high levels of environmental toxins may have a mild temporary reaction to the mobilized toxins as the liver removes them from fat storage. Also, because whey protein isolate is composed of the same basic proteins found in human breast milk, those with milk allergies may experience minor gastric distress from Whey Protein Isolate. This usually disappears if you reduce the amount of Whey Protein Isolate you consume. If you have a serious milk protein allergy, which is very rare, you should not use whey isolate. Lactose intolerance is not a milk allergy.

Can Whey Protein Isolate cause constipation?

Low-quality Whey Protein Isolate can cause digestive upsets, including constipation. If this occurs using a high-quality whey protein isolate, it may due to consuming too little water and/or insufficient levels of essential fatty acids (EFAs). It's important to drink at least ten glasses of pure water per day and incorporate at least three servings of raw seeds or raw seed oils, such as ENERGYFIRST® OmegaEnergy® Oil and OmegaEnergy® Mix. The seeds and oils contain soluble fiber and omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs that are essential to proper digestion and elimination. Exercise and vitamin C can both be helpful as well.

Can I use Whey Protein Isolate if I have kidney disease?

100% whey protein isolate is one of the most easily digested and best absorbed forms of protein available. It has an extremely high Protein Efficiency Ratio – a measure of protein quality. This is especially important in conditions like renal failure where protein intake must be limited and it is most prudent to consume the highest quality options, like whey protein isolate and egg white protein, rather than proteins like red meat and dairy that produce problematic metabolic waste by-products and residues.

Can I use ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder if I have celiac disease?

Yes. While those with celiac disease are instructed to avoid wheat and gluten, ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder is totally free of both.

Can I mix ENERGYFIRST® ProEnergy® Protein Powder with fruit juice?

While you could certainly do so, this would defeat the purpose of the ENERGYFIRST Program. Fruit juice – even freshly squeezed – is very high in sugar. It takes many pieces of whole fruit to make one glass of juice. Fruit juice is quickly broken down into glucose in your bloodstream causing an instant blood sugar rush and subsequent insulin spike – a vicious cycle. You can use whole fruit in your shake, but avoid fruit juice. Fiber-dense whole fruit is far less concentrated than fruit juice. The best plan is to blend whole fruit with raw seed oil and Whey Protein Isolate, which slows gastric emptying and the conversion of carbohydrates to glucose.

Is whey protein primarily for body builders and elite athletes?

On the contrary, people of all ages and physical ability can─and should─benefit from foods like whey protein that offer superior nutritional value. From infancy to our senior years, we all require well-absorbed, easy-digesting, 100% complete protein. Granted, whey protein is the #1 choice for many body builders and professional athletes because of the tremendous advantages it offers, including boosting energy and immune health naturally, promoting an efficient metabolism, helping to build lean muscle mass,5 supporting rapid muscle recovery after intense exertion, and improving overall performance, among other attributes. People working to trim fat are also well advised to incorporate whey protein daily, since it has been repeatedly shown to promote healthy, lasting weight loss while retaining precious, metabolically-active, lean muscle tissue.6
