Secrets of the World’s Longest Living People
There is an interesting book on the market titled “Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From The People Who Lived The Longest”. In it, author Dan Buettner describes 9 longevity concepts he refers to as the “Power9.”
The Power9 are “nine secrets to a longer, healthier life.” They were comprised after Buettner gathered a team comprised of staff from National Geographic, longevity experts, and scientists who identified and then traveled to locations all over the globe where people were living longer, healthier lives than the average adult living in the United States.
From Italy to Greece to Costa Rica to the Loma Linda Seventh Day Adventists in the US, Buettner gathered insightful information he synthesized into the following Power9:
1. Move (Find ways to move mindlessly, make moving unavoidable.)
2. Plan de Vida (Know your purpose in life.)
3. Down Shift (Work less, slow down, rest, take vacation.)
4. 80% Rule (Stop eating when you’re 80% full.)
5. Plant-Power (Eat more veggies, less protein and processed foods.)
6. Red Wine (Drink consistently and in moderation.)
7. Belong (Create a healthy social network.)
8. Beliefs (Embrace some sort of spiritual or religious participation.)
9. Your Tribe (Make family a priority)
Though simple in nature, these tips could go a long way toward adding years to your life and life to your years. But don’t try to tackle them all at once! Doing so may overwhelm and discourage you. Instead, find just one you can concentrate on and take it from there. Before long, you’ll realize a difference and you’ll be grateful for it.
